It’s the next big thing in “social” media … and I bet you’re already doing it. You are so hip (not that that expression is so hip) and you probably didn’t even know it. SnapChat … WeChat … What’sApp … and iMessage! Yes, they’re all more or less the same thing: Text groups. And they’re private.
Instead of posting everything online for all to see, increasingly we’re posting our best photos and messages to specific individuals (those we actually care about) in closed texting groups for just those that we care about to see.
Even the Millennials have discovered that you don’t need to share everything with everybody. Not only is that not fun, it has potential downsides, like hurting your chances to get into that favored college, or getting hired for that ideal job.
Seriously, do we really want to share everything with everybody? What’s the point other than to show others that we’re living an idealized life that we’re really not living. It depresses them (falsely) and depresses us (because it’s a lie).
Instead, we’ve discovered that it’s more fulfilling to share our real selves with just those that we love. That’s not to our 1,000 so called Facebook “friends”, it’s our 3, or 5 or 7 real friends.
If you’re still Facebooking, please ask yourself why. Aren’t there a few people who you REALLY care about more? Text with them. You’ll be far happier.
