Barrier Busting Opportunity Checklist

One  vital function of the role of CEO is eliminating barriers. Since the CEO holds THE position of power within the organization, only he/she can remove the major barriers that impede execution and employee engagement.

Here is a Checklist list of common barriers to help you identify them in your own organization:

Cultural Barriers:

  • Culture “happened” instead of being designed
  • Culture of greed
  • Culture is inconsistent with desired competitive advantage
  • Workforce attitude, such as entitlement or not engaged, fights change
  • No diversity
  • No defined values
  • Too much bureaucracy
  • Too many Stuffed Shirts” (their primary focus is keeping their job and turf while squashing others)
  • No fun in the business
  • No risk taking
  • No creativity and/or innovation
  • No constructive conflict
  • Different cultures in different parts of the organization
  • Fire-fighting culture
  • Too much emphasis on financial results
  • Other ________________________________

Leadership Barriers:

  • No focus:
    • No set priorities
    • More than 5 active goals or initiatives (the same as no focus)
  • Unaware leaders/executives
  • Lack of communication
  • No development for Executives, Managers and Supervisors
  • No delegation
  • Weak financial management
  • Avoidance of people problems, such as removing “C” players
  • Lack of balance between personal and business lives
  • Management cliques
  • Inability to face reality and address difficult issues
  • Bad attitude toward the organization, leaders or owners
  • Slow decision making or procrastination
  • Impatience
  • Leadership style is inconsistent with competitive advantage and/or culture
  • Past success blocks new ideas or creates arrogance
