Do You Feel Like a Sardine?

On Saturday morning I spoke before a great audience on Cannery Row in Monterey, California. Ocean View Avenue was renamed “Cannery Row” in honor of John Steinbeck’s novel, published in 1945. A film was released in 1982 and a stage production in 1995. The picture below is from 160knots.com.

sardineAccording to the web site canneryrow.com, “The swift expansion of the Monterey fishing industry at the turn of the last century gave birth to the fish canning industry. The first major cannery on Ocean View Avenue was the Pacific Fish Company in 1908.

Over the next decade, fishing and canning technology improved and prepared Monterey for the huge spike in demand for canned sardines brought about by World War I. Cannery Row’s wartime production grew from 75,000 cases in 1915 to 1.4 million in 1918.

After World War II, the sardines disappeared from Monterey Bay and brought economic disaster to Cannery Row.

Before the collapse, Monterey’s fishing industry had become one of the most productive in the world.

The founding of the Cannery Row Company in 1976 began a revival of Cannery Row that transformed it from a street of burned and decrepit canneries to the number one visitor destination on California’s Central Coast.

What If We Feel Closed In?
There are times in all of our lives when we feel closed in, perhaps like sardines.
We may feel that there’s no way out of a tough health condition, a challenging work situation, a financial difficulty, or the negative attitude of certain people around us. If you find yourself in such a situation, may I suggest that you ask the following question:
“If nothing changes, would this be acceptable in 5 years?”
If the answer is NO, then it’s time to take some action. You may not be able to solve the entire problem, but what is one small step you could take TODAY? A first step might be a positive daily affirmation that declares the situation solved.
If you feel like a sardine, perhaps it’s time to figuratively get out an emotional can opener and decide to break out. I believe you can do this!

A Break Out Affirmation!

“I am strong! I am capable! I can change most any situation positively!”
You are special. You are unique. You are destined for greatness. You are a Champion! Have a powerful week!
